With formal training in metal sculpture and experience in large-scale public art, Jason Shih approaches sculpture as choreography in space. His works embody dynamic tension and poetic restraint, capturing the rhythm of movement within static material. Through attentive observation of everyday life, he condenses emotion, memory, and atmosphere into sculptural presence.
1 Please provide us with a brief introduction about yourself and your professional background.
I was born in 1972 in Taiwan. In 1991, while studying in the Fine Arts Department at Taipei National University of the Arts, I began specializing in metal sculpture—a discipline that has shaped my artistic direction ever since. In 2001, I graduated from the School for American Crafts at Rochester Institute of Technology in the United States, majoring in metal sculpture, and later had the privilege of serving as assistant to metal sculptor Albert Paley, where I was involved in craft and public art projects. In 2015, I earned my Ph.D. in Art from the China Academy of Art. I am currently based in Taiwan, where I continue to work actively in both sculpture and public art, developing projects that engage material, space, and the public sphere. My artistic vision is shaped by a wide range of influences, from contemporary dance to avant-garde fashion. I have long been inspired by the work of German choreographer Pina Bausch and British designer Alexander McQueen. Bausch’s exploration of time and space resonates deeply with my interest in sculpture’s ability to embody kinetic energy and spatial imagination, while McQueen’s bold approach to imagery and thematic expression encourages me to expand my creative language. I am also influenced by the aesthetic principles of Futurism and Constructivism, particularly their emphasis on movement, structural tension, and dynamic force. These ideas inform my pursuit of capturing the beauty of motion and the restrained power of natural forces. Many of my sculptures suggest moments of suspended gravity, where fleeting movement is distilled into a still yet charged presence. As a sculptor, I value attentive observation of subtle, everyday moments and the shifting configurations of forms within a poetic, imagined space. For me, creating art is a way to share the moods, rhythms, and narratives embedded in daily life.
2 When did you, and what drove you to, establish this particular brand?
Good Art Co. Ltd was established in Taiwan in 2022. "Passion for good" is my brand philosophy.
3 Please enlighten us with your brand’s background and inspiration?
Sculpture uses visual techniques of color, shape, and texture to interpret the beauty of light, shadow, rhythm, and volume. Sculpture creators strive for qualities that can touch people's hearts. In fact, they are as abstract as temperature and smell, but full of profound penetrating power. This aura directly points to the human heart, an aesthetic sense that allows people to enter the drama in resonance, or it may be like nostalgia, embodied in the concern for seeing things and the timid expectation of being close to home. The sea breeze, mountain mist, morning sun, and glow, in addition to shape and color, there is also the memory of temperature. The smells of cooking smoke, hot soup, wooden tables, and pottery cups echo the gradual tones of nostalgia. In people's daily aesthetic experience, the temperature and smell memories accompanied by touch often become a trigger for reliving old dreams. The work involved in sculpture creation is to "condense" the presence of various beautiful things in this dazzling, beautiful time and space in an appropriate way and with true emotions. As a sculpture creator, I like to experience life through perceptual observation in subtle moments, and I also like to play with ever-changing shapes in a poetic, imaginative space. For me, artistic creation itself is a kind of emotion, allowing me to share various moods and stories in life.
4 What exalting innovations has your brand brought to the industry and what makes it differ from your competitors’ innovations?
If architecture is condensed music, then sculpture is the dancer in space. With the dynamic viewing of the viewer, the sculpture's rich postures naturally transform with time, light and shadow. And in this huge space-time environmental theater, the wind on the lake, the fish swimming in the water, the herons standing by the water, or the rough waves, use color, shape and texture to interweave the interpretation of gravity and light and shadow. Dance beautifully. In the dynamic beauty of the abstract works, the audience will appreciate the simple beauty of lightness and streamlines that are gently evoked by the dancer's posture, as well as the light and shadow creation full of tension.
5 Throughout the years, how do you maintain the level of class and finesse that you persistently bring to your brand’s table?
Just as our brand believes in "Passion for good". We will always maintain a passionate pursuit of beauty in our professional endeavors.
6 From a developmental aspect, what projections, and electrifying agendas, have been made regarding your brand’s future (those of which can be disclosed)?
Through the collaboration of AI in creation and manufacturing processes, our brand plans to expand into the fields of public art and spatial creation of environments in the future.
7 Congratulations! Your brand has won the iLuxury Awards this year. As the winner of the iLuxury Awards, what does it mean for you and your brand to receive this distinction?
I am very happy that my work can be recognized on the international stage. In the future, I will still focus on the delicate humanistic thinking of Eastern sentiments in my own creations, and continue to delve into the vivid expression techniques of contemporary visual art in form and color.
8 Based on your personal opinion, what is it that has allowed the iLuxury experts to bestow this grandiose accolade upon your brand?
Our brand possesses both modern fashion and Eastern cultural characteristics, and stands out in its expression of contemporary art forms.
9 Based on your personal judgment, what defines a product or service to be “luxurious”?
Luxury products are highlights that exist to inspire people's aesthetic sense and spiritual connection. Their existence is a source of inspiration, like a ray of light in people's lives.
10 Within the last decade, what distinct developments have you witnessed in your industry?
People's tastes change with the times. Digital technology and social media have accelerated people's adaptation to trends. Often, amidst the intertwining of regional culture and fashion trends, brands need to create intriguing stories to resonate with people.
